Privacy Policy for German Vocab Harvester

German Vocab Harvester (“the Extension”) is an open-source tool designed to extract vocabulary from web pages and send it to your local Anki application.

This Privacy Policy explains how your data is handled. We believe in strict data minimization and local-first architecture.

1. Information We Do NOT Collect

The developer of this Extension does not collect, store, transmit, or have any access to your personal data, browsing history, or API keys. There are no tracking scripts, analytics, or developer-controlled servers involved in this Extension.

2. Handling of API Keys (Bring Your Own Key)

To function, the Extension requires a Groq API Key.

Your API key is stored strictly on your local device using Chrome’s encrypted chrome.storage.local API.
It is never transmitted anywhere except directly to the official Groq API endpoint (api.groq.com) to authenticate your AI requests.

3. Web Page Content and AI Processing

When you click the “Generate Flashcards” button:

The Extension reads the text of the currently active tab.
A truncated version of this text (up to 3,000 characters) is securely sent directly to the Groq API.
Groq processes the text to extract vocabulary and returns the data to your browser.
The Extension then routes that data directly to your local Anki application via localhost.

We do not monitor, store, or log the websites you visit or the text you process.

4. Third-Party Services

This Extension acts as a bridge between your browser and two third-party services. Please refer to their respective privacy policies to understand how they handle the data you send them:

Groq: Receives the text you choose to process. Groq Privacy Policy
Anki / AnkiConnect: Runs locally on your machine to store your flashcards.

5. Open Source Transparency

This project is completely open-source. You are encouraged to review the source code on GitHub to verify all data handling practices described in this policy.
